Or smoothies to be accurate.
Yes, this past two weeks the three of us have drastically increased our nutrient intake trying out various juice and smoothie recipes using my new juicer.

I came home from holiday recently and realised how much better I felt for the huge quantities of fruits and salad I had consumed whilst away.

I’m also getting married in July. I would have loved to fit in a few skin treatments before then but can see time getting the better of me so have decided to make my skin glow, working from the inside out.

Whilst mindful that we shouldn’t be drinking fruit smoothies morning, noon and night due to the quantity of sugars, albeit natural sugars, in consuming masses of fruit, I’ve had a few successes in squeezing in the odd vegetable here and there when no one was looking.

Here are my week’s highlights.

Green Superfood Juice 2 apples, 3cm brocoli stalk, 1/2 celery stick, 1/4 cucumber, handful baby spinach, 1/4 lemon, 1cm ginger, ice Felt very smug drinking this one.

Whilst I’m quite happy drinking something that looks more like pond water than something that resembles a tropical cocktail, my daughter and OH are not. Yet.

Many of the recipes need the use of a juicer and a blender.  You juice apples, citrus, celery, cucumber and root vegetables but you blend soft fruits and leafy vegetables like spinach and kale. But you could just make the recipes that used one or the other.

Tropical Breakfast Smoothie Orange, banana, small handful grated coconut, handful oats. Went down a treat with everyone.

I’ve not yet got my daughter to take more than a sip of a green vegetable juice but she has been enjoying the breakfast smoothies which contain yoghurt and oats or muesli to help keep hunger ‘locked up til lunch’.

Mellow yellow juice. 1/2 pineapple, 1/2 yellow pepper, 2 kiwi, 2 apples, 1 banana. Not convinced. Tasted the pepper all morning

Unfortunately I have found it necessary to get up 10 minutes earlier to prepare our morning beverages. Not just to make the refreshments, but to clean the apparatus afterwards. This is not so much a bore as with the older machines but is still best carried out straight away.

Purple Power 2 apples, medium raw beetroot, handful frozen berries. Not usually a fan of beetroot but not bad!

So has it been worth it so far?

Ultimate Breakfast Smoothie 3 oranges, 1 lime, 1tbp Museli, 3 tbp Nat yog, handful frozen berries, pinch cinnamon. A great favourite with everyone

Absolutely. So far I have noticed three distinct things. Maybe coincidental, maybe not.

Pineapple, brocoli and ginger juice 3/4 Pineapple, 3cm brocoli stalk, 2cm ginger, ice Just for me, this one

The eczema patches on my face have gone. OK, I have been away and seen some sun and am feeling a lot less stressed than a few weeks ago.

My, erm, cough, digestive system is much improved.

I went out for a few drinks my my OH last weekend and woke up without a hangover!  I usually wake up with a splitting headache after just 2 glasses of wine. Last weekend I had 4! Is my liver working better???? Or maybe I am just more hydrated.

I will try the wine experiment again this weekend.

About lovelucie1

I cannot sit without something in my hands to sew, crochet, sketch etc. This becoming something of an addiction. In fact, I start to get twitchy if I am stationary somewhere, waiting for an appointment, waiting for my daughter, away with work, without some project to keep my hands busy. Minutes wasted make me anxious. This blog logs my progress to raise funds through my creations to feed my textile habbit.

  1. I do love a good fruit smoothie, but the pain of cleaning it all up has always put me off. Also trying to find ways of getting more fruit into Ed! I made him a banana smoothie this morning but had some left, so poured it on my cereal, much to Lily’s disgust. It was delicious though!

  2. I got a juicer – a good one – some years ago but it was such a pain to clean it afterwards I gave up. My daughter sometimes makes smoothies in our blender which isn’t quite so difficult to clean but all in all I’ve not really done the smoothie thing. However, if it will serve as an excuse to fit in another two glasses of wine maybe I’ll give it another go 🙂

    • I can’t imagine you don’t get enough fruit and veg already, surrounded by wonderful French markets.
I put the lack of hangover down to hydration. It happened again this weekend. I made sure I drank masses of water throughout the day, before going out, and guess what, no hangover. It’s a pity it’s taken me so long to work this one out!

  3. Smoothies are fab but I have only made the fruit variety, will have to give the vegetable options a try. I am sure it must benefit in some way with your health but maybe you are right about the hangover, you are better hydrated.

  4. Wow what a rainbow of concoctions. I have to say that I’d be hard pushed to get my lot to try the green smoothie …. in fact I’d be hard pushed to try that one myself but I am sure it tastes delicious 🙂

As for the benefits, I’m sure all those smoothies would be having a positive affect, regardless of the holiday (although I’m sure that’s a contributing factor).

  5. Hurrah, so nice to know that you like green smoothies too! I’ve been making them for a while now and feel so much better for it! Maybe I will blog it too:) I’ve been putting spirulina in mine as well as green veg. Have even managed to sneak some spinach into my girls smoothies and they haven’t noticed as the colour has still stayed pink!

    • I’m a real juice convert. Amazingly my hayfever has completely disappeared after 5 days on just juice. I’ve been taking spirulina and wheatgrass powder as a separate shot as I don’t want them to affect the taste of my juice. Pretty foul! Definitely a life style change! Glad to have found a fellow juicer. What juicer do you have?
